About City Kids

City Kids After School Enrichment Program is free-of-charge and is available to children in grades K-6 living in North Minneapolis and is run from Folwell and North Commons parks.

City Kids offers your child a safe and structured environment for those critical hours when school ends and many parents and guardians are still working.

Many schools will bus your child to the park for our program. Work with your school’s transportation official to set up a schedule.

Hours and days of operation:

  • Monday-Friday
  • 2pm-6pm
  • Full-day on SOME out-of-school days. You will receive a calendar outlining our service days.

Academics

Have you noticed your child struggling in school? Is he/she behind peers in reading and math skills? City Kids provides your choice of academic help:

  1. Tutoring:

In a tutoring session, your child will spend an hour in a small group with a qualified tutor working on a tailored curriculum. We work with you and your child’s teacher to find the areas in which the student needs the most help and then develop specific lessons. Students enrolled in tutoring will also receive up to 15 minutes of help with daily homework from school.

  2. Enhanced Homework Help

Students who enroll in enhanced homework help will be given small group attention to complete daily homework from school and will also be given extra help in topics being covered in their grade. Enhanced homework help is designed for students who are performing at grade level and will help students maintain their level and work to keep up good grades.

Social Development

City Kids offers opportunities daily for your child to interact with children of different ages and abilities. Our Site Coordinators plan a wide range of daily activities from free play at the playground to baking to crafts.

Physical Development

City Kids provides your son/daughter with many physical recreation opportunities. Most children are antsy and hyper at the end of the school day and need a way to release all of the built-up energy. City Kids offers physical experiences new to most children including ice skating, snow-shoeing, cross-country skiing, rollerblading, biking and bike safety and maintenance as well as familiar games such as basketball, soccer and running games.

Arts Program

Students enrolled in the City Kids program take part in art classes twice per week. In the past, students have created paintings, learned to sew, done pottery and have participated in hip-hop dance, acting and music.

Field Trips

Students will be invited to attend 3 field trips during the school year. These trips will take place on school vacation days and have included snow-tubing, water parks and museums.
